How to Become a Lash Technician
Being a lash tech is hard work, and to be frank, it is not for the faint in heart. Believe it or not, there is a process you have to go through to not only be certified through training, but to also have a license and be certified through the state. Lashing requires patience, time, dedication and knowledge you can receive from the information below.
Go to School
Being a lash tech is more than just training and making money. Before we start, I just want to say that every state has different qualifications for becoming a lash artist. Most states require you to have an esthetician or cosmetology license before becoming a lash tech because clients want to know that you know more than just the basics. Having a background in esthetics or cosmetology will place you above the average tech because you are constantly working around the eyes and the face, which is a sensitive area. It gives you the ability to take extra precautions and know what to do if the impossible happens when completing a lash service. Not to mention, having a license in esthetics or cosmetology makes you credible and reputable to all clientele. Schooling can take 7 months to a year depending on the state and the school.
Certification
After you complete your esthetician or cosmetology courses and receive your license, you're ready to take on a lash course or training. Every training class is different depending on the teacher. Some classes range from 1-3 days for those that are very detailed and like extensive training. Other classes can just be for a full day (8 hours). Lash training classes typically cost $200-$1000+ a class. This price varies based on the teacher, the skill and the information given. Classes can be expensive but for this range, the class includes content, a kit (which can include everything used on a client during the service), skilled information on how to lash properly, and a certificate actually certifying you as an official lash tech.
Advanced Training
As if one class isn't enough! The lash industry is growing rapidly and there are so many styles to choose from. Clients have different looks they like and some may desire a full natural look, others may want a wispy natural look and then there are some that like DRAMA in the eye area. This causes for more time and skill to be able to provide the client what they need. Many skilled lash technicians (techs that have been lashing for years) offer advanced training classes. These classes are held at the best convenience for you and usually, range from $700-$2000+ depending on the location and the teacher. The industry requires you to know a little more than the average Joe along with a variety of creativity to be able to apply more than a classic lash. Other lash types include Russian sets and volume lashes that create a more dramatic look and requires more time.
After you have finished your courses, Basic Training, and Advanced Classes (optional) you're ready to take on the lash world with the information given to you. It's up to you to create your own lash techniques and tricks that will help you stand out from the rest.
